Chapter Two: Questions No One Could Ignore
Police officers assigned to the charity event approached after hearing the commotion.
Rather than accuse anyone, they asked everyone to step into a private conference room while Emily remained with a child-services specialist who had been attending the gala as a guest.
The elegant woman, Victoria, insisted there had been a misunderstanding.
"I adopted Emily legally," she said.
The maid—whose name was Sarah—looked down.
"I never abandoned her."
She explained that years earlier she had suffered serious injuries after a traffic accident.
While she recovered, Emily had been placed into temporary protective care.
When Sarah awoke weeks later, she was told her daughter had already been transferred through emergency legal proceedings.
She had searched ever since.
Detective Laura Bennett listened carefully.
"Do you have documentation?"
Sarah nodded.
"I've kept every record."
The faded photograph was only the beginning.
She also carried hospital papers, letters, and copies of court filings that she had spent years collecting.
