Chapter 3: A Home Rebuilt

A year later, the mansion was still standing.
But it was no longer cold.
Laughter echoed through the halls.
Fresh flowers decorated the foyer.
The marble floor remained polished, but now nobody knelt on it.
The daughter had returned to university.
She was studying architecture.
She wanted to design homes where people felt safe.
Where nobody would ever feel trapped.
One afternoon, she stood beside her father in the same foyer where everything had changed.
He looked older now.
Softer too.
"I should have seen it sooner," he said quietly.
The daughter smiled.
"You see it now."
Tears filled his eyes.
"I'll spend the rest of my life making up for it."
She wrapped her arms around him.
"You don't have to make up for it. Just stay."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Sunlight poured through the grand windows.
The marble beneath them glowed gold instead of cold white.
The house had not changed.
The people inside it had.
And that made all the difference.
As father and daughter stood together, the wounds of the past finally began to heal.
Because some betrayals leave scars.
