Chapter 2: The Price of Deceit

"You told me you adopted him legally after his biological mother abandoned him," Arthur whispered, a mix of disgust and horror washing over his face. He looked at the woman he had married, realizing he had been sharing a life with a monster.

Evelyn backed away, tripping slightly against the edge of a decorated table. "Arthur, please! I did it for us! You wanted a son so badly, and she was just a nobody who couldn't give him the life he deserved! Look at him, he is a gentleman because of me!"

"He is terrified of you!" Arthur roared, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.

Before Evelyn could utter another lie, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open. Two police officers, whom Clara had contacted before entering the venue, stepped inside. Behind them was a woman in a nurse's uniform—the very accomplice Evelyn had paid off years ago, now handcuffed and swallowed by guilt.

"Evelyn Vance, you are under arrest for child abduction, fraud, and illegal conspiracy," the lead officer stated firmly.

As the handcuffs clicked around Evelyn's wrists, the crowd erupted into whispers of shock. She screamed and cursed, her elegant updo falling apart as she was dragged out of the opulent ballroom, stripped of her dignity, her status, and the stolen life she had built.
