Chapter 2: The Woman Everyone Pretended Not to See

The ballroom fell silent.
Executives looked at one another in confusion as Danny Crawford stood frozen beside the old cleaning cart.
The elderly woman slowly rose to her feet.
"I'm sorry, sir," she said, lowering her eyes. "I didn't mean to interrupt your event."
Danny barely heard her.
His pulse pounded in his ears.
"My name," he whispered. "You said your son's name was Danny."
She nodded.
"It was."
"Was?"
Her hands tightened around the mop handle.
"I haven't seen him since he was five."
The words landed like a hammer.
Danny's throat tightened.
"My mother disappeared when I was five."
The old woman stared at him.
For a long moment, neither of them moved.
Then her eyes drifted to the small crescent-shaped birthmark beneath his left ear.
The mop slipped from her hands.
"No..."
She reached toward him before stopping herself.
"My little Danny had the same birthmark."
A man near the ballroom entrance suddenly turned away.
Richard Hale.
Chairman of Crawford Developments.
The man who had served as Danny's legal guardian after his father's death.
Danny noticed him leaving.
"Stop him."
Two members of the security team intercepted Richard before he reached the elevator.
"What is this?" Richard demanded. "Danny, your guests are waiting."
Danny never looked away from the old cleaner.
"What was your name?"
Tears filled her eyes.
"Maria."
The name stirred something buried deep inside him.
A voice.
Soft hands brushing his hair.
A faded memory of someone humming while rain tapped against a tiny apartment window.
Danny whispered the word he hadn't spoken in three decades.
"Mom?"
Maria broke into tears.
She covered her mouth as years of grief finally caught up with her.
"I never stopped looking for you."

Across the room, Richard Hale quietly closed his eyes.
He knew the past had finally found him.
