Chapter 1 - THE FALL

A scream echoed through Sterling Manor.

Claire Sterling hit the final step of the grand wooden staircase and collapsed onto the polished floor.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Then the ballroom erupted.

Guests rushed toward her.

Someone shouted for an ambulance.

Someone else screamed for Lucas.

Claire barely heard them.

Pain burned through her back and side.

Her cream maternity dress was stained near the hem.

Her first instinct was not to look at the people surrounding her.

It was to press both hands against her eight-month-pregnant belly.

“Baby.”

Her voice trembled.

“Please.”

Then she felt movement.

One small kick.

Weak, but unmistakable.

Claire closed her eyes.

Above her, Evelyn Sterling stood at the railing in an emerald evening gown.

Her face had gone pale.

Yet instead of looking horrified, she looked furious.

“You ruined my life.”

Evelyn pointed down at Claire.

“You came into this family and destroyed everything.”

The guests stared.

Rosa, the Sterling family’s longtime housekeeper, grabbed Evelyn’s arm.

“Miss Evelyn, stop.”

Evelyn jerked away.

“Make her apologize.”

Lucas Sterling’s mother, Helena, appeared behind Evelyn.

Unlike everyone else, Helena did not look shocked.

She looked calculating.

That frightened Claire more than the fall.

Claire reached inside the hidden pocket of her dress.

Her fingers found her phone.

The screen had cracked.

It still worked.

She tapped a contact she had saved under a false name.

Detective Mason Reed answered immediately.

“Claire.”

She swallowed against the pain.

“Detective.”

“It already happened.”

Silence came from the other end.

Then Mason’s voice hardened.

“Was Evelyn there.”

Claire looked toward the balcony.

“Yes.”

“And the others.”

“Yes.”

“Don’t let anyone leave.”

Claire almost laughed.

She was lying at the bottom of a staircase surrounded by one of the wealthiest families in Massachusetts.

She had no authority to stop anyone.

But that had never been the plan.

“Send everyone here.”

“Now.”

She ended the call.

Lucas came running through the ballroom doors.

“Claire.”

He dropped beside her.

His tuxedo jacket hit the floor as he reached for her.

Claire recoiled.

Lucas froze.

The pain in his expression would have convinced anyone else.

But Claire had learned that expressions could lie.

Three nights earlier, she had discovered a file hidden inside Lucas’s private office.

Her name had been printed across the first page.

Under it were four terrifying words.

MATERNAL TERMINATION CONTINGENCY PLAN.

She had not understood what it meant.

Not yet.

But the final page had carried a date.

Tonight.

Claire stared into her husband’s eyes.

“You knew something was going to happen.”

Lucas looked genuinely confused.

“What are you talking about.”

Before Claire could answer, sirens sounded beyond the gates.

Helena Sterling slowly descended the staircase.

Her eyes never left Claire’s phone.

And Claire suddenly realized something.

Helena wasn’t worried about the baby.

She was worried about who Claire had called.
