Chapter 1 – The Secret Behind the Will

Christopher carried Emma upstairs himself.

She refused to let go of his neck.

Every time he tried to set her down, her tiny fingers tightened around his shirt.

"It's okay," he whispered.

"I'm here now."

For the first time since Rachel's death...

He realized those words should have been spoken years earlier.

A family doctor examined Emma and confirmed she had suffered no lasting physical injuries, though she would need time to recover emotionally.

When the doctor left, Christopher sat beside her bed.

"I'm sorry."

Emma looked at him with tearful eyes.

"You didn't know."

"No."

"I should have."

She hesitated before reaching beneath her pillow.

"I was saving this."

She handed him a folded piece of paper.

It was a child's drawing.

Christopher stood beside Emma.

Rachel stood beside them both.

Above their heads she had written in careful crayon letters:

My Family.

Christopher closed his eyes.

Rachel had never asked him for money.

She had never wanted his name.

She had only wanted Emma to know her father.

And he had failed them both.

Downstairs, the mansion had become a fortress.

Police officers interviewed every employee.

Security officers collected phones, surveillance footage, and access records.

Yvette handed investigators the recorder.

"I've kept copies."

Christopher looked at her.

"You knew I might not believe you."

"I knew powerful people sometimes choose comfort over truth."

He lowered his head.

"You were right."

That evening, Christopher entered his mother's private sitting room.

Estelle Pierce was waiting calmly beside the fireplace.

She didn't stand.

She didn't apologize.

"So," she said.

"You've decided to believe servants."

Christopher placed the recorder on the table.

"I decided to believe your own voice."

For the first time...

His mother's confidence cracked.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

Estelle sighed.

"I spent forty years protecting this family."

"Rachel was a scandal."

"Emma complicates everything."

Christopher's voice remained calm.

"She is my daughter."

"And your granddaughter."

Estelle looked away.

"I was protecting our legacy."

Christopher answered quietly.

"No."

"You were protecting your control."

He removed a folder from his briefcase.

"My attorneys have already filed papers."

"What papers?"

"You've been removed from every family trust."

Her face lost all color.

"You wouldn't dare."

"I already did."

Then he walked out.

Without looking back.
