CHAPTER 3 — The Woman Behind the Mask

The trial lasted three weeks.
The courtroom remained packed every day.
Jurors watched hours of security footage.
Therapists testified.
Neighbors spoke.
Former employees came forward.
Then someone unexpected entered the courtroom.
Emily Foster.
Cassandra's younger sister.
She hadn't spoken to Cassandra in nearly fifteen years.
"I've been waiting for someone to stop her."
The courtroom fell silent.
Emily described a childhood dominated by manipulation.
Cruelty disguised as discipline.
Humiliation disguised as love.
"It didn't begin with Lily."
"It began decades ago."
For years, Cassandra had carefully built the image of the perfect woman while leaving broken people behind her.
Former assistants testified.
A former fiancé testified.
Even an elderly caregiver from Cassandra's first volunteer organization testified about emotional abuse that had never been reported.
Piece by piece...
The woman everyone admired disappeared.
The real Cassandra remained.
When the prosecutor finished, he asked only one question.
"Did the defendant ever show genuine remorse?"
Emily answered without hesitation.
"No."
"Only fear of being exposed."
The jury deliberated less than five hours.
"Guilty."
The word echoed through the courtroom.
Cassandra never looked toward Marcus.
She never looked toward Lily.
Even as deputies led her away in handcuffs...
Her face remained empty.
Not ashamed.
Only defeated.
Marcus knelt beside Lily.
"It's over."
Lily quietly asked,
"She can't come back?"
"No."
"Never again."
