Chapter 10 - The Pregnancy No One Understood

Lauren had not told Mom immediately that she had lost the baby.

For nearly three weeks, she pretended everything was normal.

Mom kept texting about appointments.

Baby names.

Nursery ideas.

Lauren ignored most of it.

Then Mom sent the handwritten note to the clinic where Lauren had been receiving prenatal care.

It was meant as a clumsy attempt to address Lauren’s jealousy.

Some children get the life others were supposed to have, but that doesn’t mean your life is over.

Without the second sentence, which had apparently been written on another page, the message sounded sinister.

Lauren never received it.

The hospital mistakenly included the first page in my discharge paperwork after Emma was born at an affiliated facility.

At least that was Lauren’s explanation.

It sounded unbelievable.

Until Mom admitted it.

When I confronted her, she cried.

“I was ashamed.”

“You knew I got it?”

“Months later.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I hoped you had thrown it away.”

That became the pattern of our family.

Everybody hoped uncomfortable truths would disappear.

They never did.

Dad finally apologized to Lauren for what he had said before Christmas dinner.

Not a conditional apology.

Not an explanation.

A real one.

“I made your place in this family sound earned,” he told her.

“It never was.”

“You were our daughter because we loved you.”

Lauren listened without responding.

Then James spoke.

He had stayed quiet through most of the conversation.

“There is another issue.”

Everyone looked at him.

“Emma.”

Silence returned.

Lauren lowered her head.

James did not insult her.

He did not threaten her.

He simply said, “Understanding how you reached that moment doesn’t change what happened in it.”

Lauren nodded.

“For the foreseeable future, you will have no contact with my daughter.”

Mom started to speak.

Lauren stopped her.

“No.”

She looked at James.

“He’s right.”

That surprised all of us.

Then she turned to me.

“I’ll stay away.”

I believed her.

For exactly six hours.

At 9:14 that evening, our doorbell camera detected motion.

I opened the live feed.

Lauren stood on our porch.

James saw my expression.

“What?”

I turned the screen toward him.

Lauren wasn’t alone.

A man stood beside her.

Someone I had never seen.

He was holding a folder.

Lauren looked directly into the camera.

“I know I promised to stay away,” she said.

“But Mom and Dad need to hear what this man has to say.”

The stranger lifted the folder toward the camera.

Across the front were three words.
