CHAPTER 2 – THE MOMENT HIS EMPIRE CRACKED
The room fell into complete silence.
Dr. Evan Vale glanced from the two federal investigators to the board members gathering outside the ultrasound suite.
His practiced smile disappeared.
"There must be some misunderstanding," he said evenly.
One investigator stepped forward.
"Dr. Evan Vale?"
"Yes."
"We need you to remain here while we conduct an inquiry regarding allegations of patient intimidation, obstruction of medical reporting, and possible domestic violence."
Several nurses exchanged stunned looks.
One of the board members, Richard Collins, stared at Mia's trembling hands.
"Mrs. Vale," he asked gently, "would you allow an independent physician to examine your injuries?"
Mia looked at me.
For years, fear had answered every question before she could.
This time, she nodded.
"Yes."
Evan took a step toward the bed.
"Mia, don't do this."
His calm voice sounded almost caring.
But she flinched.
Everyone in the room saw it.
No explanation could erase that single instinctive movement.
Within minutes, another obstetrician arrived with a female forensic nurse.
They carefully documented every bruise.
The fresh injuries.
The older fading ones.
The medical photographs were timestamped.
The reports were signed by independent physicians.
Outside the room, hospital employees began quietly speaking to investigators.
One nurse admitted she had once treated Mia for unexplained bruising.
A resident remembered Evan insisting on handling his wife's records personally.
Another physician revealed that Evan had repeatedly discouraged staff from documenting certain injuries.
Each testimony alone seemed small.
Together...
They formed a pattern impossible to ignore.
At 11:15 a.m., the chairman of the hospital board entered the room.
He removed Evan's hospital identification badge himself.
"Pending the outcome of this investigation," he said quietly, "you are relieved of all duties."
