Chapter 6: Oliver’s Secret

Oliver sat upright in his hospital bed when Nathan entered.

Emma slept in the next room, and Noah had finally fallen asleep while holding a stuffed bear provided by a nurse.

Oliver looked older than ten.

Not physically.

There was a watchfulness in his eyes that no child should have possessed.

Nathan sat beside him.

“Rachel said you wanted to tell me something.”

Oliver glanced toward the open door.

“Is Mom coming back?”

“No.”

“Ever?”

Nathan paused.

“I don’t know what the court will decide. But she will never be allowed to hurt you again.”

Oliver searched his face.

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

The boy nodded, though trust did not return immediately.

“Mom has a box,” he said. “In her dressing room. Behind the mirror.”

“What kind of box?”

“A silver one. She talks to Grandma Caroline about it.”

“How do you know?”

“Mom locked me in her closet once during a party because I said I didn’t want to take pictures.”

Nathan’s hands tightened.

“I heard them talking. Grandma said the box was why you could never leave Mom.”

“Did they say what was inside?”

Oliver nodded.

“Something about Uncle Michael.”

Nathan tried not to show how deeply the name struck him.

“How do you know who Michael was?”

“Mom showed me pictures.”

“Why?”

Oliver looked ashamed.

“She said I looked like him. She said if I disobeyed her, bad things could happen to me too.”

Nathan closed his eyes for one second.

When he opened them, Oliver was watching carefully.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Are you mad at me?”

Nathan leaned forward.

“Never for telling the truth.”

“But Mom said the truth hurts families.”

“Lies hurt families. Truth gives them a chance to heal.”

Oliver stared at his hands.

“Why didn’t you come home?”

The question landed harder than any accusation.

“I thought I was building something for you.”

“We didn’t need more houses.”

Nathan’s throat tightened.

“I know.”

“We just needed you.”

Nathan reached for his son’s hand.

Oliver allowed him to take it.

“I cannot change all the nights I missed,” Nathan said. “But I can change what happens next.”

Later, Detective Morales obtained a warrant for Victoria’s private rooms.

Behind an antique mirror in her dressing room, investigators found a hidden safe.

Inside was a silver box.

It contained the missing flash drive from Michael’s crash.

There were also letters between Caroline and Victoria, bank records, photographs and a handwritten plan created before Nathan and Victoria ever met.

The plan described him as a target.

Gain trust.

Create dependency.

Control public image.

Secure marriage.

Produce heirs.

Maintain leverage.

Nathan read the page in silence.

At the bottom, in Victoria’s handwriting, was one final line.

Once the children are old enough, Nathan becomes unnecessary.
