Chapter 1: The Cold Descent

The elevator doors of the luxury penthouse slid shut with a silent, heavy thud, cutting off the echo of Preston’s frantic shouts. Inside the mirrored capsule, Evelyn stood perfectly still. The air felt thin, stripped of oxygen, smelling faintly of the expensive scented candles that had lit her husband’s betrayal just moments before.

In her trembling hand, the brown paper envelope felt heavier than lead. The monochrome ultrasound picture inside—showing two tiny, fragile heartbeats—seemed like a cruel joke from the universe. She had walked into their kitchen expecting to share the greatest joy of her life, only to find Preston’s hands wrapped around the waist of a woman in a short black dress, their lips locked in a passion he hadn’t shown Evelyn in years.

Evelyn didn’t cry. The heartbreak was too deep for tears, instantly freezing into a hard, protective shell. When the elevator reached the lobby, she walked past the bowing concierge without a word, stepping straight out into the cool, rain-slicked streets of New York. Her phone vibrated violently in her purse—Preston’s name flashing repeatedly across the screen. She pulled the device out, her thumb hovering over the glass for a fraction of a second before she powered it off completely. Slipping into the back of a waiting yellow cab, she looked up at the glowing grid of the penthouse skyline, knowing she was leaving that world behind forever.
