Chapter 1: The Moment Everything Stopped
Chapter 1: The Moment Everything Stopped
Victoria Langford's hand was inches away from Isabella Moretti's face.
The elderly woman hadn't moved.
Neither had anyone else.
Most people simply watched.
Because powerful people rarely faced consequences.
Then Emma stepped forward.
Her tray clattered to the floor as she caught Victoria's wrist.
The entire ballroom froze.
"What do you think you're doing?" Victoria hissed.
Emma's pulse thundered in her ears.
"I think," she said carefully, "you shouldn't hit her."
A gasp swept through the crowd.
Nobody spoke to Victoria Langford that way.
Nobody challenged her publicly.
Victoria yanked against Emma's grip.
"You little idiot."
The words dripped with venom.
"Do you have any idea who I am?"
Emma swallowed.
"No."
Victoria laughed.
"And that's exactly why you'll regret this."
The ballroom remained silent.
Not because people disagreed with Emma.
Because they were afraid.
Afraid of Victoria.
Afraid of her influence.
Afraid of becoming her next target.
Then a calm voice cut through the tension.
"That's enough."
The room instantly changed.
Not louder.
Quieter.
Far quieter.
Because everyone recognized that voice.
Vincent Moretti stepped forward.
His dark suit seemed almost insignificant compared to the authority he carried.
People moved aside instinctively.
Victoria's confidence faltered.
Only slightly.
But Vincent noticed.
He noticed everything.
His eyes shifted from Victoria to Emma.
Then to his mother.
"Are you hurt?" he asked Isabella.
The elderly woman smiled gently.
"No, thanks to her."
She pointed directly at Emma.
For a long moment Vincent said nothing.
Then he looked at Emma again.
The waitress who stood trembling despite trying not to.
The woman who had risked her job—and possibly much more—to protect a stranger.
"Thank you," he said quietly.
The words stunned the room.
The most feared man in Chicago was thanking a waitress.
Victoria's face turned pale.
Because she suddenly realized something.
The woman she had nearly struck wasn't an ordinary guest.
May you like
And the waitress she had threatened had just become someone Vincent Moretti would remember.
Forever.
