CHAPTER 1: THE NIGHT ETHAN FINALLY SAW THE TRUTH

CHAPTER 1: THE NIGHT ETHAN FINALLY SAW THE TRUTH

The kitchen became completely silent.

Even the sound of water dripping from the faucet felt louder than before.

Emily stood frozen, her hands still inside the sink, afraid to move. Ethan stared at her back, noticing details he had ignored for months.

The way she held her shoulders.

The way she avoided eye contact.

The way she immediately apologized even though she had done nothing wrong.

“I’m sorry…” Emily whispered.

Those two words broke something inside Ethan.

He stepped closer.

“Sorry for what?”

Emily slowly turned around.

Her eyes were red. Her face was tired. She looked smaller than he remembered, like the woman he loved had been slowly disappearing inside his own home.

“I should have finished before you came home,” she said softly.

Ethan looked at the mountain of dishes.

Then he looked back at her.

“You’re pregnant, Emily.”

She lowered her gaze.

“I know.”

“And you’re standing here alone washing everyone’s mess?”

No answer.

That silence was louder than any confession.

From the living room, Linda finally noticed the change.

“What’s taking so long?” she called. “Emily has always been sensitive. Don’t make a big scene, Ethan.”

Ethan turned toward the doorway.

For the first time in years, his mother saw something unfamiliar in his eyes.

Disappointment.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Pain.

“You knew?”

Linda remained calm.

“Knew what?”

“That she was doing this.”

Olivia, Madison, and Chloe entered behind her.

They looked confused, almost annoyed that Ethan was questioning them.

Olivia crossed her arms.

“Ethan, please. Don’t act like she’s a victim. Emily lives here. She should help.”

Madison nodded.

“We all do things around the house.”

Ethan looked around.

The expensive clothes.

The perfect makeup.

The untouched hands.

Then he looked at Emily’s swollen feet.

“You call this helping?”

Nobody answered.

Ethan walked to Emily and gently took the dish from her hand.

His voice became quiet.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Emily’s lips trembled.

“Because every time I tried…”

She stopped.

Ethan waited.

“Every time I tried to talk about it, you looked so happy when you came home. You were proud of this family. I didn’t want to be the person who destroyed that.”

The words hit harder than any accusation.

Because Ethan realized something.

He had protected everyone except the one person who needed him most.

He took Emily’s hand.

“I’m sorry.”

Linda immediately stepped forward.

“Ethan, don’t let emotions control you. Family problems stay inside the family.”

Ethan looked at her.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“But cruelty stays with the person who causes it.”

The room went silent.

That night, Ethan packed a small bag.

Not Emily’s.

His mother’s expectations.

The version of his family he had been protecting in his mind.

Before leaving the kitchen, he looked at Emily.

“I promised you that you and our baby would never feel alone.”

He gently touched her stomach.

“I failed that promise once.”

May you like

A pause.

“But I won’t fail again.”
