Chapter 3 – A Promise Remembered

The gala ended early.
But Emma's life was only beginning to change.
The following morning, she expected another exhausting shift.
Instead, a black sedan waited outside her apartment building.
Two security officers stepped out.
"Mr. Moretti would like to speak with you."
Emma hesitated.
She had heard too many stories about Vincent Moretti.
Most were frightening.
Still, she climbed inside.
The car carried her not to a corporate office...
But to a quiet rehabilitation hospital.
Vincent stood beside Isabella's room.
"My mother asked for you."
Inside, Isabella smiled warmly.
"You remind me of someone."
Emma laughed softly.
"I don't think we've met."
"No."
Isabella reached into a small wooden box beside her bed.
"But your father did."
She removed an old photograph.
Two young construction workers stood smiling outside a partially completed children's hospital.
One was Daniel Carter.
Emma's father.
The other...
A much younger Vincent Moretti.
Emma stared in disbelief.
"My father never told me this."
"He wouldn't."
Vincent answered quietly.
"Because he saved my life."
Emma looked up.
"What?"
Twenty years earlier, before wealth and headlines, Vincent had been trapped beneath collapsing scaffolding during a construction accident.
Daniel Carter had ignored every warning.
He crawled beneath twisted steel and pulled Vincent to safety moments before the structure collapsed.
The rescue left Daniel with permanent injuries that eventually ended his career.
"He refused any reward," Vincent said.
"He told me..."
Vincent paused.
"...that if I ever became successful, I should simply help someone else."
Silence filled the room.
"I've been looking for him for years."
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
"He never told us."
"Heroes rarely do."
Vincent placed a folder on the table.
Inside were documents.
Daniel Carter's outstanding medical bills.
Paid in full.
Emma looked up immediately.
"I can't accept this."
"It isn't charity."
May you like
Vincent shook his head.
"It's a debt."
