Chapter 3: The Lie Behind the Perfect Engagement

The party ended within minutes.

Guests left quietly, carrying rumors instead of congratulations.

Inside the empty ballroom, Logan stood near the windows.

The rain outside reflected the storm inside him.

Marina sat with Noah asleep in her arms.

For the first time, Logan saw something he had ignored.

The way Noah relaxed against her.

The way his breathing became peaceful.

The way his silent child finally looked safe.

“He never spoke before,” Logan said quietly.

Marina looked down.

“He used to.”

Logan turned.

“What?”

She touched Noah’s hair gently.

“Before he was taken from me, he talked all the time.”

The words hit him.

Taken.

Not abandoned.

Taken.

Logan looked toward Vanessa.

She stood near the doorway, silent.

For once, she had no explanation.

Richard, Logan’s family attorney, entered holding a folder.

“I think you need to see this, Mr. Mercer.”

Inside were documents.

Hospital records.

Agency reports.

A hidden custody agreement.

And messages.

Messages proving Vanessa had arranged everything.

She had convinced Logan that Marina left.

She had erased Marina from Noah’s life.

All because she wanted the position beside him.

Logan slowly lowered the papers.

His hands shook.

“Why?”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

The perfect mask finally cracked.

“Because you loved him more than you loved me.”

Silence.

“And I knew if his mother came back, I would lose everything.”

Logan stared at her.

Not with anger.

With disappointment.

“You hurt a child… to protect a relationship?”

Vanessa had no answer.

Marina looked away.

She didn’t need revenge.

The truth had already done enough damage.

Logan walked toward her.

“I’m sorry.”

Two simple words.

But they carried years of failure.

Marina looked at him.

“I don’t need apologies.”

A pause.

“I need Noah to never feel abandoned again.”

Logan nodded.

And for the first time, he understood what love actually required.

Not control.

May you like

Not money.

Presence.
