CHAPTER 3 — Every Camera Was Watching

Twenty-three police officers entered the ballroom the moment the steel barriers lifted.
Not to rescue the guests.
To secure the crime scene.
"Nobody touches their phones," the lead detective ordered.
"Nobody leaves."
The room fell silent.
Detectives separated witnesses one by one.
Security staff collected every recording.
Then the ballroom's surveillance footage appeared on a massive projector.
There was no dramatic editing.
No missing angles.
Only facts.
The screen showed Damian grabbing my arm.
Shoving me into the marble wall.
My head striking the stone.
Guests watching.
Nobody intervening.
Then came something even worse.
His closest friends laughing.
Encouraging him.
One voice clearly saying,
"Teach her a lesson."
Another saying,
"Nobody's going to stop you."
The detective paused the video.
He slowly faced the crowd.
"Did anyone here attempt to assist the victim?"
Not a single hand went up.
The silence felt heavier than the crystal chandeliers hanging overhead.
One elderly woman finally lowered her eyes.
"I... should have."
The detective nodded.
"Yes."
"You should have."
Damian's lawyer leaned toward me.
"We can settle this privately."
I looked at him.
"No amount of money buys back dignity."
Within minutes, officers placed Damian in handcuffs.
He stared at me in disbelief.
"You've destroyed my life."
I answered quietly.
"No."
"You destroyed it when you decided power placed you above consequences."
As he was escorted away, the ballroom remained silent.
May you like
Not because anyone pitied him.
Because they had just watched influence lose to evidence.
