CHAPTER 3: THE WHITE LINE

Everything became motion.
The father fired the flare.
A burst of red fire exploded into the sky, and the wolves recoiled with sudden hesitation, snarling and circling just beyond the light.
“GO!” he shouted.
Daniel shoved Emma into the back seat and climbed in after her. The father slammed the door and jumped into the driver’s seat.
The engine roared.
But the wolves were not retreating anymore.
They were running.
Alongside the car.
Between the trees.
Keeping pace.
Emma screamed as something slammed against the window—fur, teeth, shadow.
The car fishtailed through the snow-covered road.
“Where are we going?!” Daniel shouted.
“Out!” his father snapped. “If we stop, we die.”
The trees blurred into darkness.
Then—up ahead—faint tire tracks appeared again.
Fresh ones.
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
“They’re recent,” he whispered.
His father didn’t answer.
But his grip on the wheel tightened.
The road opened slightly into a frozen clearing.
And there, half-buried in snow, was another vehicle.
The black SUV.
Vera’s.
Engine off.
Door open.
Empty.
Emma began to cry again. “Where is she?”
No one answered.
The father slowed the car.
Something felt wrong.
Too quiet.
Even the wolves had stopped chasing.
Daniel looked out the window.
And saw footprints.
Leading from the SUV.
Toward the trees.
Not away from the forest.
Into it.
His father whispered one sentence, barely audible:
“She’s still here.”
A shadow moved between the trees ahead.
Not animal.
Not wind.
A person.
Standing perfectly still.
Waiting.
Daniel pressed his hand against the glass.
And for the first time, he understood:
They were never being rescued from the forest.
They were being brought to the center of it.
ENDING
The car rolled forward slowly, headlights cutting through falling snow.
The figure did not move.
Emma held Daniel’s hand so tightly it hurt.
Their father exhaled once.
“I’m going to end this,” he said.
The car stopped.
Silence swallowed everything.
And Daniel realized the forest was not hunting them anymore.
May you like
It had already decided they belonged to it.
