Chapter 1: The Hidden Truth

Michael felt the ground tilt beneath his feet. The sterile smell of the hospital suddenly felt suffocating as his father’s words echoed in his mind.

"What do you mean, Dad?" Michael’s voice was barely a whisper, his hand gripping his father’s rough, wrinkled palm.

The old man, Thomas, wiped a stray tear from his cheek. "Six years ago, shortly after you left the farmhouse to pursue your residency in the city... Lily came back."

Michael froze. Lily. His college sweetheart, the woman he had loved completely, but whom he had drifted away from due to the relentless pressure of medical school and his own stubborn pride. They had broken up right before he moved away, a clean cut—or so he had thought.

"She was pregnant, Michael," Thomas said, his voice trembling. "She didn't want to ruin your career. She knew how hard you worked for this white coat. But she was weak, and her heart couldn't take the toll of childbirth. Before she passed away in that very farmhouse, she named the baby Grace. She made me promise not to burden you unless... unless I had no other choice."

Thomas looked toward the operating room doors, where the red light had just turned on. "Grace isn't just my granddaughter, Michael. She is your daughter."

The revelation hit Michael like a physical blow. The little girl with the burning fever, the one he had just ordered to be rushed into emergency—carried his blood. He didn't just have a patient in that room; he had a daughter. Without a word, Michael turned and sprinted through the double doors, his heart hammering against his ribs.
