CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH NO ONE COULD ERASE

The hospital moved quickly.

Doctors stabilized Claire and monitored the baby overnight.

By morning, the obstetrician smiled.

"Your daughter is safe."

Claire burst into tears of relief.

Ethan squeezed her hand.

"I thought I was going to lose both of you."

The doctor became serious.

"You came in when you did."

"A delay of another hour could have had very different consequences."

Meanwhile, Detectives interviewed everyone separately.

Vanessa repeated the same story.

"It was an accident."

Diane supported her.

"I only saw Claire fall."

Then Detective Morgan visited the house.

Something caught his attention.

A small security camera above the front door.

It had been installed months earlier after a package theft.

The camera didn't capture the entire staircase.

But it did capture the hallway.

The footage clearly showed Vanessa grabbing Claire's arm.

Claire pulling away.

Then Vanessa forcefully shoving her toward the stairs.

There was no stumble.

No accident.

No self-defense.

Just anger.

When confronted with the recording, Diane finally lowered her head.

"I lied."

"Why?" the detective asked.

Tears streamed down her face.

"I've spent my whole life protecting Vanessa."

"I didn't know how to stop."

The detective quietly replied,

"Today... you almost helped destroy another daughter."

Vanessa was arrested on charges including aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Diane later admitted providing false information during the investigation and cooperated with authorities, helping establish an accurate account of what had happened.
