Chapter 2: The Ring That Should Have Been Buried

The laughter died one voice at a time.
Emily knelt beside the collapsed birthday cake, wiping frosting from her face with trembling hands.
"I'm... I'm so sorry."
No one answered.
Victoria Bennett wasn't looking at the ruined cake.
She was staring at the silver ring lying on the polished marble floor.
Twenty-seven years.
She hadn't seen that ring in twenty-seven years.
Her breathing became shallow.
"It can't be..."
Chloe frowned.
"Grandmother?"
Victoria didn't hear her.
She slowly walked forward and bent down despite the stiffness in her knees.
With trembling fingers, she picked up the ring.
Inside the worn band were three tiny engraved letters.
S.P.A.
Her hands began to shake.
Emily reached for it.
"I'm sorry, ma'am. It belonged to my mother."
Victoria didn't let go.
"What... did you say?"
"My mother."
Emily smiled sadly.
"She wore it every day."
The ballroom had become completely silent.
Victoria looked directly into Emily's eyes for the first time.
Dark brown.
Just like Sarah's.
She had never noticed before.
"What was your mother's name?"
Emily hesitated.
"Sarah."
Victoria's heartbeat stopped.
"Sarah..."
She could barely force out the next word.
"...Parker?"
Emily blinked.
"Yes."
The ring slipped from Victoria's fingers.
It struck the marble with a sharp metallic sound.
Twenty-seven years ago...
Sarah Parker had disappeared without saying goodbye.
Officially.
That was the story.
Unofficially...
Victoria had helped destroy her life.
Sarah had worked as a junior accountant for Bennett Industries.
Brilliant.
Honest.
Fearless.
She uncovered millions of dollars hidden in illegal offshore accounts.
The fraud wasn't Richard Bennett's.
It belonged to his older brother.
The company would have collapsed.
So Victoria made a choice.
Protect the family.
Or protect the truth.
Sarah refused to stay quiet.
Within a week...
She was fired.
Blacklisted.
Her apartment lease mysteriously canceled.
Her bank accounts frozen during a fabricated investigation.
Then she vanished.
Victoria convinced herself Sarah had simply moved away.
She never searched.
She never asked.
Because guilt is easier to bury than truth.
Until now.
Emily quietly picked up the ring.
"My mother died five years ago."
Victoria looked as though someone had struck her.
"How?"
"Cancer."
Emily's voice remained calm.
"She never talked about the people who hurt her."
Then Emily added the sentence that shattered Victoria completely.
"She only said..."
"...one day the truth would find them."
That evening...
Victoria couldn't sleep.
She entered the old family archive hidden behind the library.
Dust covered shelves that hadn't been touched for decades.
She searched until sunrise.
Finally...
She found it.
A faded personnel file.
Sarah Parker.
Inside was a resignation letter.
Only...
It wasn't Sarah's handwriting.
Victoria compared signatures.
They were different.
Someone had forged it.
Her stomach dropped.
She realized something horrifying.
Sarah had never resigned.
Someone had removed her.
May you like
And Victoria had believed the lie.
For twenty-seven years.
