Chapter 1: The Recording

Mariana didn't sleep that night.

The sound of the key turning outside Doña Consuelo's bedroom echoed in her mind until dawn.

She knew one thing.

No one would ever believe a housekeeper's word against the millionaire's wife.

She needed proof.

The next morning, before anyone else entered the kitchen, Mariana hid her old cell phone behind a row of spice jars.

The recording began.

For hours...

Nothing.

Then Camila walked in.

She opened the refrigerator, looked at the tray prepared for Doña Consuelo, and frowned.

"That's too much."

She removed half the food.

Then she uncapped a tiny glass bottle.

Three clear drops fell into the soup.

A moment later, she laughed quietly to herself.

"If she keeps sleeping..."

"Santiago will finally agree to send her away."

Mariana's hands shook.

But she didn't move.

The recording captured everything.

Every word.

Every drop.

That afternoon, Camila entered Doña Consuelo's room carrying the tray.

The elderly woman forced herself to whisper,

"I'm not hungry..."

Camila leaned close.

"Good."

"The sooner you stop eating..."

"The sooner everyone can move on."

Then she smiled.

The camera caught that smile too.

Mariana finally had what she needed.

But before she could leave the kitchen...

Camila turned.

Their eyes met.

"You've been very curious lately."

Mariana felt her heart stop.
