Chapter 13 - THE EXIT PLAN

Cassandra’s plan was almost elegant.
That made it worse.
She intended to wait seventy-two hours after the wedding.
Then she would tell Michael she needed space.
Within two weeks, she planned to file for divorce.
Before that happened, she expected the six-hundred-thousand-dollar trust distribution to clear.
She believed half could be moved into a joint account.
She had also prepared copies of confidential company documents.
Insurance records.
Property valuations.
Michael’s admissions about the forged signature.
Everything was leverage.
“She was going to blackmail him,” Rebecca said.
“Maybe not directly.”
“What would you call it?”
“Negotiated silence.”
I laughed coldly.
“That’s an expensive phrase for blackmail.”
Michael sat at the far end of the conference table.
He looked hollow.
“Was any part of it real?”
No one answered.
He looked at me.
“Dad.”
“I don’t know.”
“I loved her.”
“I know.”
“She told me she loved me.”
“I know.”
His voice cracked.
“Was I just stupid?”
I thought carefully before answering.
“You were arrogant.”
He looked down.
“You believed consequences were for other people.”
“You believed we would always clean up your mistakes.”
“You believed Cassandra’s cruelty was acceptable as long as it wasn’t aimed at you.”
“And when it finally was aimed at you, you discovered what your mother had been living with.”
Michael nodded slowly.
That truth hurt him more than any insult could.
The investigation moved quickly after that.
Cassandra’s bond was revoked when prosecutors learned she had attempted to contact a witness.
Aaron Pike gave a full statement.
He admitted Cassandra hired him to steal Ellen’s DNA report.
He also admitted she instructed him to delete any footage showing the theft.
He claimed he had not expected violence.
When Cassandra slapped Ellen and Michael shoved her, Pike panicked.
He tried to erase the hallway recording because he feared the stolen document would connect him to the assault.
That explained the corrupted video.
But one mystery remained.
The anonymous person who had connected Deborah Lane to Cassandra.
Detective Benton finally found the source.
Thomas Vale.
Cassandra’s grandfather.
He was eighty-four.
Living in assisted care.
And dying of cancer.
He requested to speak with Ellen.
We met him at the facility with Detective Benton present.
Thomas looked frail.
But his mind was sharp.
“I sent the note,” he admitted.
“Why?” Ellen asked.
“Because I was tired of carrying it.”
“Carrying what?”
His eyes filled.
“What happened at St. Joseph’s.”
Deborah gripped her chair.
Thomas turned toward her.
“Your baby did not die in that hospital.”
Every person in the room froze.
Deborah whispered, “What did you say?”
Thomas began crying.
“Your son was taken.”

And with those three words, a family scandal became something much darker.
