Chapter 2: The Footage No One Expected

The sirens grew louder.
Still, no one in the ballroom moved.
Preston stood in the center of the dance floor, trying to regain the confidence that had slipped from his face.
He laughed.
"You think one security camera is going to save you?"
I didn't answer.
I pressed a clean napkin against Sophie's head as blood continued to seep through the white fabric.
She looked up at me with frightened eyes.
"Mommy..."
"I'm here, sweetheart."
"I never touched Uncle Preston's phone."
"I know."
"I believe you."
Those four words were all she needed.
For years my family had demanded proof before believing me.
My daughter deserved better.
The ballroom doors burst open.
Two paramedics rushed toward Sophie while hotel security entered behind them.
The lead security supervisor, Carlos Mendes, looked around the room.
"What happened?"
Before I could answer, Preston stepped forward.
"The little girl stole my phone."
His voice was calm.
"She became violent when confronted."
Several guests exchanged confused glances.
Violent?
An eight-year-old covered in blood?
Carlos frowned.
"And the injury?"
"She accidentally ran into the menu board."
I stared at him.
"You hit her."
Preston smiled.
"Can you prove that?"
"Maybe not."
I looked toward the camera above the entrance.
"But your own wedding venue can."
Carlos followed my gaze.
His expression changed.
"The ballroom has four synchronized security cameras."
The room became silent.
Preston's bride, Vanessa, slowly turned toward him.
"You said there weren't any cameras."
Preston looked at her sharply.
"I thought there weren't."
Carlos removed a radio from his belt.
"Lock the security footage."
He paused.
"No one leaves until the recording is preserved."
For the first time that evening...
My father's confidence disappeared.
Twenty minutes later...
The hotel manager arrived carrying a laptop.
The recording played on a large projection screen normally used for wedding slideshows.
Nobody spoke.
The first camera showed guests laughing.
Children dancing.
Waiters serving champagne.
Then Preston walked away from the head table.
Camera Two followed him.
He looked around carefully.
His right hand slipped into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out his titanium phone.
The ballroom held its breath.
Everyone watched him walk toward our table.
Toward Sophie's tiny denim jacket hanging on the back of her chair.
He glanced over his shoulder.
No one seemed to be watching.
Slowly...
He slid the phone into her pocket.
The video continued.
Less than thirty seconds later...
He returned to the microphone.
"My phone has been stolen!"
Gasps echoed across the ballroom.
My mother covered her mouth.
My father stared at the screen in disbelief.
Vanessa stepped backward.
"No..."
She whispered.
"No..."
The footage continued.
Preston dramatically searched Sophie's jacket.
Pulled out the phone.
Then smiled.
Not relief.
Victory.
Every guest saw it.
Then came the final recording.
The assault.
Crystal-clear.
Sophie's small body shielding herself behind me.
Preston ripping the heavy oak menu from its stand.
Swinging it with both hands.
The sharp crack.
Sophie's collapse.
Blood.
The screen went black.
Nobody breathed.
Carlos quietly closed the laptop.
"I've already made a copy for the police."
May you like
No one defended Preston.
No one could.
