Chapter 2 – The Family Finally Breaks

My mother was the first to speak.
"There must be another explanation."
The officer looked at her.
"There isn't."
My father stared at the frozen image on the screen.
His favorite son.
His pride.
Caught placing the phone inside his granddaughter's jacket.
His shoulders slowly sagged.
The bride burst into tears.
"You told me she stole from you."
Preston's voice cracked.
"I panicked."
"You don't understand."
"No," she answered quietly.
"I finally do."
She slipped her wedding ring off.
Placed it on the surveillance desk.
Then walked away without looking back.
Preston reached for her.
She didn't stop.
Neither did she turn around.
The officer stepped beside Preston.
"Sir..."
"You're under arrest for filing a false police report, fabricating evidence, and assaulting a minor."
"I never meant to hurt her!"
"You hit an eight-year-old child with a solid oak sign."
He lowered his head.
Handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
For the first time...
The golden child had no one left to protect him.
Outside the security office, reporters had already gathered.
News spread quickly.
The wedding reception became tomorrow's headline.
Groom Arrested After Wedding CCTV Exposes False Theft Against Child.
Back inside the ballroom...
Guests quietly approached me.
One by one.
"I'm sorry."
"We should have spoken up."
"We believed him."
I nodded politely.
But I understood something important.
