Chapter 3: The Silence Finally Broke

The museum director addressed the guests.
"If you witnessed any portion of tonight's events, investigators will now record your statement individually."
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then an elderly woman stepped forward.
"I saw him hit her."
A banker followed.
"I heard her tell him to let go."
Then another voice.
"And another."
One by one, the silence Grant had depended upon collapsed.
The senator admitted seeing the assault.
A judge acknowledged pretending not to notice.
A famous television anchor confessed she had looked away because she feared losing access to the Holloway family.
Each confession felt heavier than the last.
Not because they had caused my injuries.
Because they had allowed them.
Grant looked around desperately.
"You were all my friends!"
No one answered.
His attorney quietly packed his briefcase.
"I'm withdrawing as your counsel effective immediately."
Grant stared at him in disbelief.
"You can't leave me."
The attorney sighed.
"I can."
He glanced toward the massive screens.
"I also happen to be one of the witnesses."
Federal agents approached.
"Grant Holloway, you're under arrest for felony assault, conspiracy to commit fraud, interstate transportation of stolen cultural property, and obstruction of justice."
Cold steel handcuffs closed around his wrists.
The sound echoed through the silent gallery.
