Chapter 2: The Family Begins to Break

Paramedics arrived within minutes.

One carefully examined Lily's lip while another checked her pupils and neck.

Ryan never left her side.

Sarah stood several feet away, unable to stop staring at the bloodstained napkin lying on the dining table.

She whispered, almost to herself,

"I should have stopped him."

Ryan looked at his wife.

"No."

"You should have protected her."

Those words struck harder than anyone else's accusations.

Sarah burst into tears—not dramatic sobbing, but the quiet collapse of someone who had spent her entire life excusing the inexcusable.

Meanwhile, deputies photographed the dining room.

The overturned chair.

The blood on the white tile.

The broken family dinner.

Every detail became evidence.

Jared tried one final time.

"I barely touched her."

One deputy calmly replied,

"The recording says otherwise."

Alex removed a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"You are under arrest on suspicion of assaulting a child."

The sharp click echoed through the dining room.

For the first time in years, Jared had no one left willing—or able—to protect him.
