Chapter 3 – A Daughter Finally Speaks

Sarah returned to the courthouse six months later.
She was no longer afraid.
Her pregnancy had reached full term.
Daniel walked beside her, holding her hand.
Jason avoided looking at her.
Richard looked twenty years older.
The prosecutor played only part of the recording.
The courtroom became painfully quiet.
Jurors listened to every word.
Then Sarah took the witness stand.
"I spent my whole childhood believing I deserved the way they treated me."
She paused.
"My father always said family protects family."
She looked directly at Richard.
"What he really meant..."
"...was that everyone should protect Jason."
She described years of emotional abuse.
Being blamed.
Ignored.
Humiliated.
Always expected to forgive.
Then she smiled softly.
"But becoming a mother changed everything."
She rested one hand on her stomach.
"I realized my child deserved better."
The defense attorney attempted to challenge her memory.
The prosecutor simply held up Sarah's phone.
"We don't have to rely on memory."
"The recording speaks for itself."
After only three hours of deliberation...
The jury returned.
"Guilty."
Jason lowered his head.
Richard closed his eyes.
Neither man said a word as deputies escorted them away.
Sarah watched quietly.
She didn't smile.
She didn't celebrate.
She simply exhaled.
