Chapter 2: The Truth My Wife Was Too Afraid to Tell

Hannah covered her face with trembling hands.

For several long seconds, no one spoke.

Dr. Melissa Grant quietly closed the hospital room door.

She pulled a chair beside Hannah's bed and spoke in the calm voice of someone who had asked this question many times before.

"Mrs. Parker..."

"You are safe here."

"If someone hurt you, you don't have to protect them."

Hannah's shoulders shook.

She glanced at me.

Then toward the sleeping baby in my arms.

Finally...

She whispered,

"It wasn't Ethan."

The words shattered me.

Dr. Grant nodded gently.

"I never assumed it was."

Tears streamed down Hannah's face.

"It was..."

She couldn't finish.

I reached for her hand.

"Hannah."

"You can tell me."

She closed her eyes.

"Your mother."

The room became perfectly still.

My mind refused to understand.

"My... mother?"

Hannah nodded weakly.

"The first morning after you left, Owen started crying."

"I tried to get out of bed."

"I was still in pain."

"Your mother said I was pretending."

Every sentence felt heavier than the last.

"She took Owen away."

"When I asked for him back..."

"She grabbed my arm."

I stared at the bruises.

Finger-shaped.

Exactly where someone would grip another person.

"I told myself it happened only once."

"But it didn't."

Hannah looked at Dr. Grant.

"She said if I kept calling Ethan..."

"...he'd lose his job because I was too needy."

"She hid my phone."

"She told everyone I was sleeping."

"She wouldn't let visitors into the house."

"When I developed a fever..."

"She said women have been giving birth for thousands of years without complaining."

My stomach turned.

Every time I had called...

My mother had answered.

She always smiled.

"Everything's wonderful."

"Hannah is resting."

"Owen just finished eating."

Every word...

A lie.

Dr. Grant quietly stood.

"I'm required to report suspected abuse."

She looked directly at me.

"I've already contacted hospital security."

"And the police."

I nodded slowly.

"Good."

Because for the first time in my life...

May you like

I wasn't thinking about protecting my mother.

I was thinking about protecting my wife.
