Chapter 1 - The Smile That Disappeared

Julian stopped on the staircase as if someone had pulled the floor out from under him.

“Mom?”

Chloe’s face went white.

Dirty water dripped from my wig, rolled down my cheeks, and soaked the faded collar of my secondhand uniform.

I removed the thick glasses and placed them carefully on the console table.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Chloe laughed.

It was a nervous little sound.

“Oh my God.”

She pressed a hand against her chest.

“This is some kind of joke, right?”

Julian came down the remaining stairs.

His eyes moved from the bucket to my soaked clothes.

Then he looked at Chloe.

“What happened?”

Chloe answered immediately.

“She attacked me.”

I almost admired how quickly the lie arrived.

“She started screaming at me, Julian.”

“She threatened me.”

“I panicked.”

Julian looked at me.

“Mom?”

I reached into my pocket.

Chloe’s eyes followed my hand.

I pulled out the recorder.

Her expression changed.

Not much.

Just enough.

“I’ve been recording since I entered the house.”

Chloe stared at me.

Julian whispered, “Recording?”

“Yes.”

Chloe recovered quickly.

“This is insane.”

She turned toward him.

“Your mother disguised herself and secretly recorded me.”

“Do you understand how disturbing that is?”

I said nothing.

That irritated her more than any argument could have.

She pointed at me.

“She wanted me to fail.”

“No,” I said.

“I wanted to know how you behaved when you believed nobody important was watching.”

Julian flinched.

Chloe folded her arms.

“And you think pretending to be poor makes you some kind of saint?”

I pressed play.

Her voice filled the foyer.

“People like you should be grateful people like me let you indoors.”

Julian’s face hardened.

Then another recording played.

“Get on your knees and clean it.”

Then Chloe’s laughter.

Then the sound of water splashing.

Julian slowly looked at her.

Chloe opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time since meeting her, I saw the polished version disappear completely.

But I still wasn’t finished.

I looked at Julian.

“Ask her about the diamond bracelet.”

Chloe’s head snapped toward me.

Julian noticed.

“What bracelet?”

I reached into the pocket of my uniform and placed a small velvet jewelry pouch on the table.

Chloe whispered, “Don’t.”

Julian heard her.

His voice became very quiet.

“Chloe.”

“What did you do?”

May you like

And suddenly the bucket of dirty water was no longer the worst thing waiting to be explained.
