Chapter 3: The Truth My Father Left Behind

Marcus Thorne arrived less than an hour later.
He parked across the street without turning off the engine.
When I climbed into the passenger seat, he didn't ask whether I was all right.
Instead, he placed a thick file in my lap.
"I didn't call," he said quietly.
"Because I needed proof."
Inside were photographs.
Bank transfers.
Private flight records.
Security footage.
Julian and Evelyn had met eighteen months earlier at a charity gala.
Three weeks later...
Julian created a shell corporation.
Six months after that...
Money began disappearing from companies connected to my father's business.
Millions at a time.
Always through fake consulting contracts.
Marcus opened another folder.
"Your father knew."
I stared at him.
"What?"
"Six weeks before he died, Richard Vance hired me."
Everything around me seemed to stop.
"He suspected someone inside the family was stealing from him."
Marcus slid a voice recorder across the dashboard.
"He left this for you."
With trembling fingers, I pressed Play.
My father's voice filled the car.
Weak.
Tired.
But unmistakably his.
"Valeria... if you're hearing this... I wasn't able to protect you."
I covered my mouth.
"I discovered Julian's affair months ago."
Tears rolled silently down my cheeks.
"I wanted to expose him immediately... but I needed evidence."
The recording paused briefly as he struggled to breathe.
"So I changed my will."
"If Julian divorced you before my death... he would inherit nothing."
Another pause.
"If he stayed married... everything would legally belong to you anyway."
My father had created a trap.
Julian thought he was protecting his future.
Instead...
He had destroyed it himself.
Marcus looked at me.
"The FBI's financial crimes division has been following Damian Cross for money laundering."
"They're ready to move."
"What do you want to do?"
I looked through the windshield toward the mansion standing on the hill.
Julian believed he had erased me.
He believed I was a chapter already finished.

He had no idea...
I was about to become the ending.
