Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO DIED TWICE

The continuity vault sat beneath an old federal reserve building.

Only two people could legally open it.

General Reed was one.

The second had been my grandfather.

His authority transferred to me through the trust.

The doctors refused to let me leave the hospital.

So the court authorized a live secure connection.

From my room, I watched General Reed and two federal judges enter the vault.

The brass key opened the first lock.

My digital authorization opened the second.

Inside were three metal boxes.

One belonged to my grandfather.

One belonged to Thomas Hale.

The third had no name.

General Reed opened Thomas’s box first.

It contained a passport, handwritten journals, audio tapes, and a video recorded in a motel room.

Thomas appeared on the screen.

Mark stood beside my bed, still handcuffed.

He made a sound that was almost a sob.

His father looked directly into the camera.

Mark, if you ever see this, I am sorry.

Thomas explained that he survived the bridge crash.

General Reed moved him to a secret location.

Three months later, Thomas learned the investigation had been compromised by Senator Dane.

He planned to testify.

Before he could, someone poisoned him.

He recorded the video while dying.

The poison worked slowly.

He had enough time to identify the accounts Dane controlled.

He also explained why Charles Whitmore created the inheritance.

Half the money came from Whitmore family investments.

The other half came from assets Thomas recovered from North Lake.

Charles held the money until Dane could no longer reach it.

Five million was always meant for Mark.

Thomas looked exhausted on the screen.

Do not punish Anna for secrets she was ordered to keep.

She is not your enemy.

Dane will try to make you believe she is.

Mark began crying openly.

I watched him without moving.

His father had warned him from the grave.

Mark had still chosen Dane’s lie.

Thomas named several accomplices.

Dr. Mercer was one.

Evelyn was not.

She had been recruited years later.

The final name was blanked from the recording by static.

General Reed opened my grandfather’s box.

Inside was the original trust ledger and a complete copy of the Meridian evidence.

The archive fire had failed.

Then he opened the unnamed box.

It contained a recent photograph.

Senator Dane stood beside a woman entering a restaurant.

The woman was my mother.

I had been told she died in a boating accident when I was nine.

A date on the photograph showed it had been taken eight months earlier.

My heart stopped.

“That is impossible.”

General Reed looked sick.

“I have never seen this image.”

Rachel zoomed in.

My mother wore a silver medical alert bracelet.

A handwritten note on the back read:

ELIZABETH WHITMORE.

WITNESS UNDER CONTROL.

LOCATION CHANGES EVERY SEVENTY-TWO HOURS.

I forgot the pain.

I forgot the room.

My mother was alive.

Senator Dane had kept her hidden for twenty-six years.

A federal technician enhanced the restaurant window.

A street sign appeared in the reflection.

The restaurant was less than ten miles from the hospital.

Then Mrs. Rivera pointed at the woman standing behind my mother.

“I know her.”

May you like

It was Dr. Mercer’s wife.

And according to hospital records, she was currently inside the neonatal unit.
