Chapter 3: Choosing His Family

The weeks that followed changed everything.
Jake took family leave from work.
He attended every doctor's appointment.
He cooked every meal.
Every evening he sat beside Megan and read children's books to the baby before they were even born.
Slowly...
She smiled again.
One afternoon Jake received dozens of missed calls from Diane.
He finally answered.
"You've abandoned your own mother!"
Jake remained quiet.
"You chose her over your family."
Jake looked toward the nursery they had painted together.
"No."
"I chose my family."
He hung up.
Soon afterward, detectives completed their investigation.
Mrs. Alvarez's recording, medical records, and statements from other neighbors established that Diane had concealed the incident and pressured Megan to remain silent.
Rather than deny responsibility forever, Diane eventually admitted she had shoved Megan during an argument.
"I never meant for her to fall," she said through tears.
But intention could not erase consequences.
A judge later issued a protective order preventing Diane from contacting Megan without permission.
Jake never celebrated the decision.
Losing the mother he thought he knew felt like grieving someone who was still alive.

It was the only choice.
