Chapter 18 - The Voice Behind the Wall

Police searched Peter’s office before dawn.
The hidden compartment was exactly where Natalie said it would be.
Inside were hard drives.
Financial ledgers.
Copies of forged documents.
Blackmail recordings.
And one audio file dated the night Laura died.
Peter’s voice was unmistakable.
“You should have stayed quiet.”
Laura answered weakly.
“You’re going to prison.”
Peter laughed.
“No, Daniel is.”
Then Natalie spoke.
“She needs a hospital.”
Peter answered.
“She needs to stop talking.”
The next several minutes were difficult to hear.
There was movement.
Laura asking for me.
Natalie crying.
Then Peter’s voice again.
“When this is over, Grant takes the kidnapping.
Daniel takes the money.
And Laura becomes an accident everyone eventually forgets.”
The recording ended.
Peter Shaw was arrested at a private airfield less than an hour later.
He had cash.
A false passport.
And a ticket booked under another name.
For one brief moment, I thought it was over.
Then Peter asked for a lawyer.
His attorney announced that Peter would testify Grant had ordered everything.
The two men began turning on each other publicly.
But the recording was only part of the evidence.
The hard drives showed Peter had created the false medical documents.
Paid Detective Benson.
Authorized the cremation.
Moved money into my accounts.
And sent the threatening email from Laura’s old address.
The conspiracy finally had a shape.
Grant started the theft.
Peter weaponized it.
Natalie participated, became afraid, helped Laura escape, failed to save her, then spent years helping conceal the truth.
And I had unknowingly invited one of those people into my children’s home.
That realization remained harder to forgive than losing the company.
Ruiz called me two days later.
“There’s something else on Peter’s drive.”
Another recording.
This one had been made one week before Laura’s crash.
Laura and Peter were arguing.
Near the end, Laura said something none of us understood.
“You think this is only about the money.
Daniel still doesn’t know what you did to his father.”
I stared at Ruiz.
“My father died twelve years ago.”
May you like
Ruiz slowly closed the laptop.
“Apparently Laura had uncovered more than one secret.”
