Chapter 1: The Man They Never Expected

The silence that followed was heavier than any scream.

My father's polished shoes echoed across the marble floor as he walked into the foyer without hurrying. The three security guards remained near the entrance, while the two attorneys quietly placed leather briefcases on a nearby table.

No one spoke.

Santiago stared at my father, confusion slowly replacing his arrogance.

"I'm sorry," he said with a dismissive laugh. "Who exactly are you?"

My father didn't answer him.

Instead, he looked directly at me.

"Valeria."

His voice was calm, but it carried the warmth I hadn't heard in over two years.

"I came to take you home."

The tears I had refused to shed suddenly blurred my vision.

"I'm sorry, Papa," I whispered.

"You have nothing to apologize for."

Santiago frowned.

"Papa?"

His eyes darted between us.

"No... that's impossible."

One of the attorneys calmly opened a folder.

"My client is Mr. Ricardo Salazar, Chairman of Grupo Salazar."

Santiago's confident smile disappeared.

The attorney continued.

"Mrs. Valeria Salazar legally retained our firm three weeks ago. We have obtained recordings, financial records, medical documents, and evidence of conspiracy, coercive control, domestic abuse, fraud, and attempted unlawful custody."

Beatriz finally found her voice.

"This is absurd! She's lying!"

Without saying a word, my father nodded toward the hidden silver clock sitting above the fireplace.

One attorney pressed a button on his tablet.

The enormous television mounted across the living room came alive.

The footage began to play.

Crystal-clear.

Every insult.

Every threat.

Every raised hand.

Every word Beatriz had spoken about leaving "no visible marks."

Neither Santiago nor his mother said another word.

Their own home had become the witness against them.
