Chapter 3: The Trial

Six months later, I entered the courtroom using a wheelchair.

Tyler entered wearing handcuffs.

He refused to look at me.

The prosecution needed less than two hours.

Security footage.

Financial records.

Fingerprint analysis.

Witness testimony.

Medical evidence.

Everything fit together with devastating precision.

Tyler finally took the stand.

His lawyer advised silence.

Instead...

He exploded.

"She stole my future!"

He pointed directly at me.

"Grandma loved her more!"

"I deserved that estate!"

The prosecutor asked one simple question.

"So you pushed your sister because you believed money belonged to you?"

Tyler realized what he'd admitted.

Too late.

The courtroom remained silent.

Mother cried uncontrollably behind the defense table.

She attempted to apologize.

To everyone.

Especially me.

"I should have stopped him."

I looked directly into her eyes.

"No."

"You should have loved us equally."

That was the first honest conversation we'd ever had.

And the last.

After deliberating less than three hours...

The jury returned.

"Guilty."

Attempted murder.

Conspiracy to commit financial fraud.

Wire fraud.

Forgery.

Multiple felony convictions.

Tyler received twenty-eight years in federal prison.

Mother accepted a plea agreement and received eight years for financial crimes and obstruction of justice.

As deputies escorted Tyler away...

He finally turned toward me.

"I hate you."

I answered quietly.

"No."

May you like

"You hate the consequences."

Then he disappeared behind the courtroom doors forever.
