Chapter 1: The Daughter Everyone Buried

The old woman's hands trembled as she held both necklaces side by side.

They were perfect copies.

Not merely similar—identical down to the tiny family crest engraved inside the clasp: an oak tree wrapped around a single star.

Only two necklaces like these had ever been made.

One had belonged to Eleanor Whitmore.

The other had been placed around the neck of her newborn daughter twenty-two years earlier.

The daughter everyone believed had died.

Eleanor slowly looked at the frightened maid.

"What is your name?"

"Lily... Lily Harper."

"How long have you had this necklace?"

"My whole life."

"Who raised you?"

"I grew up at Saint Agnes Orphanage. Sister Catherine told me I was left there as a baby. Before she passed away, she gave me this necklace and said... if anyone ever recognized it, I should listen carefully to what they had to say."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

For twenty-two years, she had mourned a child whose body had never been found after a devastating carriage accident that had plunged into a river.

Only the broken carriage had been recovered.

Her husband, William Whitmore, had insisted their daughter was gone forever.

He had forbidden anyone from searching further.

Now Eleanor realized something terrifying.

Perhaps her daughter had never died.

Perhaps someone had wanted her to disappear.

That evening, Eleanor unlocked a hidden drawer in William's old study.

Inside lay an unopened envelope marked in his handwriting.

If Lily ever returns, tell her I'm sorry.
