Chapter 16 - CHARLES’S REAL PLANCharles disappeared before investigators reached his home.

His phone was abandoned.
His bank accounts were emptied.
His private plane remained at the airport.
He had left by car.
Daniel recovered messages between Charles and Victor.
Charles had not merely known about the hostile takeover.
He helped design it.
The recording he gave us was real.
But it was also selective.
He wanted Victor arrested.
Once Victor fell, Charles intended to purchase Whitmore Global’s damaged assets through hidden companies.
He was not loyal to Andrew.
He was not loyal to Margaret.
He was waiting for everyone to destroy one another.
“Why release the mansion video?” my father asked.
“To keep public pressure on the company.”
“And expose himself in the mirror?”
“He may not know the original file included those seconds.”
Charles had planted the jewelry box where the confrontation would begin.
Margaret and Brenda planned the accusation.
Charles ensured the camera captured it.
He wanted evidence capable of destroying Andrew later.
Everyone believed they were using someone else.
Margaret used Brenda.
Victor used Andrew.
Charles used Victor.
Thomas used the crisis.
And Andrew believed he controlled me.
The empire had become a room full of people holding knives behind their backs.
Charles contacted me through an encrypted call.
“You found the reflection,” he said.
“Yes.”
“You were always more observant than Andrew.”
“Where are you?”
“Safe.”
“What do you want?”
“Control of Meridian Crest.”
“You will never have it.”
“Your father may disagree.”
“He knows what you did.”
“Then he knows I can release the rest.”
“What rest?”
“Edward Whitmore’s files.”
“We already have them.”
“Not the final file.”
My father’s expression changed.
Charles heard the silence.
“He did not tell you,” Charles said.
“Tell me what?”
“Edward was not the only one using the shipping routes.”
I looked at Alejandro.
His face remained unreadable.
Charles continued.
“Escalante vessels were involved too.”
“That is a lie.”
“Ask your father about Port Valencia.”
The call ended.
I faced Alejandro.
“What happened at Port Valencia?”
He sat slowly.
“An Escalante vessel was used without authorization.”
“By whom?”
“My brother.”
I barely remembered Uncle Rafael.
He died when I was young.
The family rarely discussed him.
“Did you cover it up?”
“I protected the company.”
The phrase again.
Everyone justified secrecy by claiming protection.
“Did Charles have proof?”
“Edward kept copies.”
“And Charles has them.”
“Possibly.”
I paced toward the window.
“If he releases them, what happens?”
“My brother is dead.”
“That is not what I asked.”
My father’s voice became quiet.
“Escalante Holdings could face historical criminal scrutiny.”
Charles wanted the company.
He intended to use old crimes as leverage.
“What will you do?” my father asked.
“I will not pay him.”
“He may release everything.”
“Then we release it first.”
My father stared at me.
“You would expose our own family?”
“I will expose the truth.”
“It could damage thousands of employees.”
“We protect them through transparency, not blackmail.”
He looked older in that moment.
“You sound like your mother.”
“I hope so.”
We scheduled a public disclosure.
Before it began, Charles sent a location.
He wanted to exchange the files for fifty-one percent of Meridian Crest.
His demand was absurd.
But his location offered an opportunity.
Federal agents traced it to an abandoned Whitmore distribution center.
The same property my trust owned.
May you like
Charles had chosen a building that belonged to me.
He still did not understand whose ground he stood on.
