Chapter 9 - BURIED ALIVE

Emergency lights flickered red along the basement walls.

Someone had locked the door from outside.

Then the air system stopped.

Rachel checked her radio.

Static.

Maya pulled her daughters' photo from her pocket and pressed it against her chest.

“We cannot die in here.”

“We're not going to,” I said.

The room had no windows, but the old shelves were bolted into concrete with steel brackets.

Rachel and I tore one free and used it against the door hinges.

The first hinge bent.

The second did not.

Smoke began leaking through a vent near the ceiling.

Someone had started a fire upstairs.

Eleanor pointed toward the evidence cabinet.

“Behind it.”

We pushed the cabinet aside.

A narrow service tunnel opened in the wall.

It had once carried laundry carts between buildings.

We crawled through darkness while smoke thickened behind us.

The tunnel ended beneath an old chapel fifty yards away.

We forced open a rusted hatch and climbed into fresh air.

Outside, flames spread through the west wing.

A black sedan raced away from the rear road.

Victoria was driving.

Graham Pike sat beside her.

They had set the fire to destroy the records and trap us underground.

But officers had already removed several boxes before the lights went out.

More important, Eleanor was alive.

At the hospital, she gave a statement that lasted six hours.

She remembered dates, names, bank accounts, and every person who had helped Charles erase her.

By morning, arrest warrants were issued for Charles, Victoria, and Pike.

Adrian and Owen were charged with kidnapping and conspiracy.

The story broke across national news.

Caldwell Vineyards stock collapsed.

Banks froze family accounts.

Women from three states called police with similar stories.

Then Rachel received a lead on Harbor House.

It was a private recovery center on the Oregon coast, owned through Blue Harbor Consulting.

Brooke might be there.

Federal agents raided the property that afternoon.

They found eleven women living under false names.

Some had been told their families were dead.

Some had been threatened with prison.

Brooke Harris was among them.

She was alive.

When Rachel told her Adrian had been arrested, Brooke said one sentence.

“Then you have not arrested the person in charge.”

Rachel leaned closer.

“Who is in charge?”

Brooke looked directly into the camera during the remote interview.

“Victoria Caldwell.”

I thought of the quiet woman who had lowered her eyes after her son struck me.

Brooke continued.

“Charles built the system. Victoria perfected it.”

Then she gave us a warning.

“She's not running away. She's going back for the only thing that can still save her.”

“What thing?” Rachel asked.

May you like

Brooke's answer made my stomach drop.

“Your condo.”
