Chapter 9 - THE BOY WAS ALWAYS PART OF THE PLAN

Ethan was not allowed inside the warehouse.

Detective Ortiz described only what he needed to know.

Someone had photographed him leaving school.

At baseball practice.

At Megan’s house.

At the grocery store with Claire.

The surveillance had lasted at least four months.

Ethan stared at Ortiz.

“Why?”

“We’re trying to understand that.”

But Claire already understood.

“Control.”

Everyone turned toward her.

She had been discharged from intensive care and moved to a secure hospital room.

“Richard knew I would leave if I thought Ethan was in danger.”

Megan shook her head.

“He was threatening Ethan?”

“Never directly.”

Claire looked ashamed.

“But he would say things.”

What things?

Ethan remembered some of them.

The city is dangerous.

Boys Ethan’s age disappear every day.

You worry too much, Claire.

What if something happened while you were being careless?

At the time, Richard sounded protective.

Now every sentence felt different.

Rebecca examined the photographs and found another pattern.

Many were taken on days Claire had meetings with bankers, lawyers, or estate managers.

Richard had been tracking Ethan whenever Claire tried to act independently.

It was psychological pressure.

A silent reminder.

I know where your son is.

Rebecca also discovered a sealed envelope hidden inside the blue folder.

Claire had written Ethan’s name across the front.

She had forgotten placing it there.

Ethan opened it with trembling hands.

Inside was a letter.

If you are reading this, something has gone very wrong.

Richard has been moving money and lying about my health.

I need you to know that none of this is your responsibility.

Do not confront him.

Go to Aunt Megan.

Trust Rebecca Sloan.

And remember our three knocks.

Always three.

Ethan read the letter twice.

Then he folded it carefully.

“He knew she was leaving.”

Ortiz nodded.

“He likely found out.”

“How?”

That question led them back to the house.

Police reviewed everything again.

Phones.

Computers.

Home security systems.

Finally, a technician found a hidden monitoring program installed on Claire’s laptop.

Every email she sent had been copied.

Every document she opened had been recorded.

The software had been installed using an administrator account.

Richard’s account.

That explained how he knew about Rebecca.

It explained how he learned about the divorce.

It explained almost everything.

Except one thing.

Claire had never typed the location of the blue folder into her computer.

She had told only one person where it was hidden.

Ethan.

He stared at her.

“You told me in the kitchen.”

Claire nodded slowly.

“I remember.”

Ethan remembered something too.

Richard had given him a new smart speaker for his birthday months earlier.

It sat on the kitchen counter.

Police examined the device.

Hidden inside its casing was a miniature recording transmitter.

Richard had been listening inside their home.

Not occasionally.

Constantly.

And when technicians traced the transmitter’s access history, they discovered someone had connected to it from outside Richard’s network.

Someone else had been listening too.
