CHAPTER 3 — THE LIES FALL APART

Richard smiled as he stepped into the foyer.

"Where's my little pianist?"

His voice made Chloe freeze.

She grabbed my hand so tightly it hurt.

I looked into my father's eyes.

"Don't take another step."

His smile faded.

"What are you talking about?"

"The recital can wait."

"We're going to talk."

Minutes later...

The police arrived.

Richard laughed.

"This is ridiculous."

"She's just a child."

"Kids make up stories."

But Chloe wasn't alone anymore.

The officers photographed every bruise.

A pediatric specialist documented the injuries.

Then Meredith quietly handed them Chloe's diary.

One officer looked at Richard.

"Sir..."

"We need you to come with us."

Richard's confidence disappeared.

He turned toward me.

"You actually believe her?"

I didn't hesitate.

"I believe my daughter."

As officers placed him in handcuffs...

Richard's mask finally cracked.

"You've destroyed this family!"

"No," I answered calmly.

"You did."

As he was led outside, neighbors watched from their front porches.

The respected grandfather everyone admired...

Was leaving in the back of a police car.

Chloe never looked out the window.

She kept her face buried against my shoulder.

For the first time in months...

She no longer had to be afraid.
