Chapter 8 - THE FALSE ALARM

The man slammed his shoulder into the door.
I locked the wheels on Maya's bed and shoved a chair beneath the handle. She was pale, but she did not scream.
"Call Ortiz," I told her. "Speakerphone."
The attacker hit the door again. The wooden frame cracked.
"Mrs. Bennett," he called, "the building is on fire. Open the door."
"Then the sprinklers should be running," I answered.
They weren't.
Maya reached the detective. I gave our floor and room number. The attacker heard me and ran.
Hospital officers caught him in the loading dock. He carried zip ties, a syringe, and a transfer order bearing a forged doctor's signature. His phone contained a message sent from an encrypted number: Move the girl before midnight.
The number had contacted Celeste's personal assistant twelve times.
Celeste was arrested before dawn.
She continued smiling as officers led her past reporters.
"You are destroying two children to satisfy your ego," she told me.
"No," I said. "You taught two children that silence was the price of surviving you."
Richard remained missing.
The next morning, Thomas Reed walked into the police station on his own. He had hidden in a church basement after realizing he was being followed. Inside his coat lining, he carried a tiny encrypted drive.
It held photographs of the donor ledger and a second set of accounts.
The Oak Creek Future Fund had received millions from Sterling Development. Most of the money moved through shell companies and returned to Richard as clean consulting income.
But one transfer was different.
Five hundred thousand dollars had gone to a company owned by State Senator Paul Voss, chairman of the committee reviewing my appointment as chief judge.
The payment was made three days before Voss publicly supported me.
Richard had not only gathered dirt on me.
He had secretly paid a politician connected to my appointment.
"He wants it to look like you bought your judgeship," Ortiz said.
My stomach dropped.
The evidence could destroy my reputation even if I had never known about the payment.
Then Thomas handed me a sealed envelope.
"Richard told me to give you this if he ever disappeared," he said.
