Chapter 8 - The Doctor Who Signed Her Death

Caleb was the last person seen speaking with my mother.
Security footage showed them inside the library seventeen minutes before the power failed.
After the lights went out, the camera system stopped recording.
Caleb claimed my mother had told him she needed air.
He said she walked toward the rear terrace.
He did not follow.
Elena did not believe him.
Neither did I.
Caleb was placed in a separate vehicle and transported to state headquarters.
Thomas came with us under protective custody.
He objected until Elena reminded him that being alive did not make him trustworthy.
The technical team examined the Mercy Ledger index.
A handwritten number beside Dr. Adrian Harlan’s name matched the registration of a private aircraft.
The plane had landed two days earlier at a rural airfield outside Black Hollow.
It had not departed.
Harlan was still nearby.
We found him at a roadside motel registered under the name Arthur Hale.
He had covered the windows with blankets.
Empty food containers surrounded the bed.
A medical bag sat beside the door.
When Elena knocked, he attempted to escape through the bathroom window.
Thomas intercepted him outside.
Harlan collapsed onto the wet grass.
“Please.”
“I did what they told me.”
Elena handcuffed him.
“Then you will have plenty to discuss.”
Inside the motel room, Harlan stared at me as though I had returned from the dead.
“You were not supposed to arrive until next week.”
“Who changed my orders?”
“Shaw.”
“Gideon Shaw?”
Harlan nodded.
“He had someone inside the contracting office.”
“Elena,” I said.
She had already begun sending the information to her team.
I turned back to Harlan.
“Tell me how Emily died.”
He looked toward Thomas.
“I cannot.”
“You signed her death certificate.”
“I signed what Rourke put in front of me.”
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“Did she survive the birth?”
“Yes.”
The word nearly broke something inside me.
“Was Noah healthy?”
“Yes.”
“Was Emily?”
“She was exhausted.”
“Frightened.”
“But she was stable.”
“Then what happened?”
Harlan pressed his cuffed hands together.
“Leah Foster had been brought to the estate earlier that afternoon.”
“Why?”
“Rourke learned Emily was helping her.”
“Judge Vale had already arranged the transfer of Leah’s baby.”
“Emily hid Leah in the old schoolroom.”
“Both women went into labor within hours of each other.”
“Did Emily know they planned to take the girl?”
“Yes.”
“She made Caleb promise to help Leah escape.”
“Did he?”
“For a while.”
“What does that mean?”
“Caleb moved Leah and the baby through the chapel tunnel.”
“He gave her a car.”
“Then he called Rourke.”
Thomas looked away.
I forced Harlan to continue.
“Why did Caleb call?”
“His mother discovered what he had done.”
“She told him Rourke would kill everyone in the house unless the child was returned.”
“Was that true?”
“It may have been.”
“Do not defend them.”
“I am not.”
Harlan’s voice cracked.
“I am explaining why frightened people made unforgivable decisions.”
“What did you do?”
“I delivered both babies.”
“I sedated Emily when Rourke ordered me to.”
“Did you inject her ankle?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Harlan looked toward the covered window.
“Rourke.”
The room became silent.
“He used a medication that would produce bleeding gradually.”
“He wanted her death to resemble a childbirth complication.”
“Why not kill her immediately?”
“He needed the ledger.”
“He believed pain and fear would make her reveal where it was.”
“Did she?”
“No.”
I imagined Emily restrained to the bed while Rourke questioned her.
I forced the image away before anger erased thought.
“What did my mother do?”
“She begged him to stop.”
“After helping build Mercy Haven?”
“She did not build it.”
“Thomas did not either.”
“Rourke and Judge Vale inherited the system from Vale’s father.”
“Your mother used it to obtain you.”
“Afterward, they used that secret to control her.”
“Did she know Emily would be killed?”
“No.”
“She believed Rourke only wanted the records.”
“Then why did she cover it up?”
“He threatened Noah.”
“He said Daniel would return to find both his wife and child dead if she contacted the police.”
Elena leaned forward.
“Why was Emily moved through the chapel?”
“Harlan answered quietly.”
“She escaped the restraints.”
“How?”
“I do not know.”
“She struck Rourke with a metal tray.”
“She reached the passage.”
“Caleb tried to help her.”
“Then Pike caught them in the chapel basement.”
“Was Emily conscious?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
Harlan looked at me.
“She said your name.”
I could not speak.
“She said Daniel would find the truth.”
“She said soldiers were trained to follow trails.”
“Rourke told her you had been trained to obey orders.”
“She laughed at him.”
A faint smile touched Harlan’s face despite his fear.
“She told him he had never understood you.”
“What happened next?”
“Pike held Caleb down.”
“Rourke injected Emily.”
“She collapsed several minutes later.”
“Was she dead when you signed the certificate?”
“No.”
The room seemed to shrink.
“You signed a death certificate while she was alive?”
“I thought she had minutes.”
“You thought?”
“I was trying to get Rourke away from her.”
“I told him she was gone.”
“He left to search for the ledger.”
“I attempted to treat her.”
“Did she regain consciousness?”
“Briefly.”
“What did she say?”
“She asked whether Noah was safe.”
“I told her your mother had him.”
“She made me promise to place something in her hand.”
“The key.”
“Yes.”
“She said locker 317 contained enough to lead you forward.”
“Then she gave me a memory card.”
“Where is it?”
Harlan looked toward his medical bag.
Elena opened it.
Beneath several instruments, she found a small card sealed inside a medication package.
“Why did you keep it?”
“Emily said it contained insurance.”
“She said if anything happened to Noah, I should send it to every news station in the country.”
“What is on it?”
“I never watched.”
Elena inserted the card into an isolated computer.
A video appeared.
The image showed the schoolroom.
The hidden camera had recorded Emily on the bed.
Rourke stood near her.
Pike held Caleb against the wall.
My mother was crying.
Harlan moved in and out of frame.
Emily looked directly toward the camera.
She knew it was there.
She said, “Paul, you should smile.”
Rourke turned.
“Why?”
“Because this is the moment that destroys you.”
The video ended.
Elena copied the file immediately.
Harlan stared at the screen.
“That was not the full recording.”
“What is missing?” Elena asked.
“The injection.”
“The struggle.”
“Everything after.”
“Who removed it?”
“I do not know.”
A vehicle stopped outside the motel.
Elena moved toward the window.
Three dark SUVs blocked the parking lot.
The men exiting wore federal windbreakers.
Elena studied them.
“I did not call federal agents.”
Thomas looked through a gap in the curtain.
“The man near the second vehicle worked for Gideon Shaw.”
The motel loudspeaker activated.
A voice ordered us to surrender Harlan into federal custody.
Elena called state dispatch.
No federal operation had been authorized.
The men outside were impostors.
Harlan began shaking.
“They found me.”
Elena directed officers toward the rear exit.
Before we could move, Harlan grabbed my sleeve.
“There is something else.”
“What?”
“Your mother did not order Emily’s death.”
“I know.”
“You do not understand.”
He looked toward Thomas.
“Neither did Rourke.”
Thomas froze.
May you like
Harlan whispered, “Rourke was following Gideon Shaw’s orders.”
The motel window exploded inward.
