Chapter 8: Ryan’s Confession

Ryan leaned back in his chair.
“You think your father saved you.”
“He did.”
“No. He delayed the inevitable.”
I kept my face still, even though fear moved through me.
The microphone beneath the table recorded every word.
“What happened to Melissa?”
His expression changed slightly.
“Melissa was weak.”
“So am I, according to you.”
“You were supposed to be.”
He glanced toward the camera.
“But then Bennett showed up.”
“My father’s name is Colonel Bennett.”
Ryan laughed.
“That title means everything to him.”
“It means more to you.”
The smile disappeared.
I had finally touched the real wound.
Ryan leaned forward as far as the chains allowed.
“My father came home destroyed because of him.”
“Your father stole military equipment.”
“He did what he had to do.”
“He sold equipment that soldiers depended on.”
“He was following orders from contractors. Bennett made him the example.”
“My father presented evidence. A court convicted him.”
“Your father took my family.”
“No. Your father’s choices did.”
Ryan struck the table with both hands.
The guard outside moved toward the door, but I remained seated.
For years, Ryan had used sudden anger to silence me.
Now the sound only exposed him.
“You married me for revenge,” I said.
“At first.”
The words landed heavily.
“And later?”
He tilted his head.
“Later I realized hurting you was easier than hurting him.”
Behind the glass, Dad heard every word.
I forced myself to continue.
“What happened to Melissa?”
“She found the clippings.”
“What clippings?”
“The ones Linda kept about Bennett. Melissa figured out we were watching his family. She threatened to go to police.”
“So you killed her.”
Ryan stared at me.
Then he smiled again.
“She fell.”
The same excuse Linda used for my bruises.
Pregnant women fall.
Unstable women fall.
Women who ask questions fall.
“Where?”
“At an abandoned quarry outside Rockford.”
“Where exactly?”
“Tell the prosecutor I want the deal.”
“There is no deal until Melissa is found.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You lied to me.”
“I said I wanted the truth.”
“You’re still my wife.”
“No.”
The word came easily this time.
“I filed for divorce this morning.”
Ryan’s face hardened.
“You think that paper changes anything?”
“It changes my name. My home. My future. It changes everything you thought you owned.”
He stood suddenly, but the chain around his waist stopped him.
The guard entered.
Ryan shouted as they pulled him away.
“You’ll never be free of me!”
I remained seated until the door closed.
Then my hands began shaking.
Detective Alvarez entered.
“You did well.”
“Did he give enough?”
“He narrowed the search area. We also have his admission about the clippings and Melissa’s threat.”
Dad appeared behind her.
His eyes were wet, but pride outweighed pain.
“You shouldn’t have had to do that,” he said.
“I needed to.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
Search teams moved into the quarry area the next morning.
After six hours, they found a shallow grave beneath a collapsed section of earth.
Melissa Grant was finally coming home.
Ryan was charged with murder.
Linda and Patricia were charged with conspiracy, evidence tampering, and obstruction.
But even with the confession, the case was not finished.
Ryan’s attorneys argued that I had manipulated him.
They claimed the hospital medication affected my memory.
They prepared to put my entire life on trial.
Then Linda made one final move.
May you like
She asked to speak with me alone.
And she promised to reveal something my father had hidden for twenty years.
