Chapter 4 — Learning to Stand Again

Recovery took months.

Not because my bones refused to heal.

Because trust did.

My father never rushed me.

Every morning he brought coffee into the guest room of the Greenwich house where I had once slammed the front door seven years earlier.

One spring afternoon he found me sitting on the porch overlooking the water.

"I wasted so much time," I said.

He sat beside me.

"So did I."

I looked at him.

"I thought you were disappointed in me."

"I was."

He smiled sadly.

"Not because you married Matthew."

"Because you believed you had to face suffering alone."

The words settled quietly between us.

A few months later I accepted a position leading the ethics and governance division at Sterling Capital.

Not because I was Richard Sterling's daughter.

Because I had spent years watching what happened when accountability disappeared.

Pain had taught me lessons no business school ever could.
