Chapter 2 – The Empire Built on Lies
Rebecca's composure finally shattered.
She pointed at Mariana with a shaking finger.
"She manipulated everyone!"
Alexander calmly opened another folder.
"I'm afraid the deception began long before the marriage."
He revealed photographs.
Legal documents.
Bank records.
"When Mariana's parents died, they left behind considerable assets."
Rebecca frowned.
"What does that have to do with us?"
Alexander answered quietly.
"Everything."
He explained that Mariana's parents had established a trust before their deaths.
Alexander had been appointed as one of its legal guardians.
But shortly after the funeral...
Mariana had disappeared.
Relatives falsely claimed she wanted nothing to do with the inheritance.
Every attempt Alexander made to locate her failed.
Years later he finally discovered the truth.
The relatives had forged documents.
Changed addresses.
Intercepted every legal notice.
By the time Mariana was found beneath that oak tree, millions of dollars remained untouched inside the trust.
Ryan looked at Mariana in disbelief.
"You never told me."
"I didn't know."
Alexander nodded.
"She truly didn't."
The room fell silent again.
Ryan slowly realized something that hurt even more than losing his marriage.
Mariana had never stayed with him for money.
She had built a life beside him from nothing.
She had supported his career.
She had sacrificed her dreams.
She had loved him before anyone else believed in him.
And he had repaid that loyalty with betrayal.
Meanwhile, Vanessa quietly removed her engagement ring.
She looked around the ballroom.
Every guest was staring.
Not at Mariana.
At her.
She understood.
She had never been marrying a successful man.
She had been marrying a man who abandoned his pregnant wife.
Without another word, Vanessa placed the ring into Ryan's palm.
"I wanted a husband."
"Not a coward."
She walked out of the ballroom alone.
The doors closed behind her.
Ryan didn't follow.
