Chapter 8: Marcus Fights Back
Marcus refused to disappear quietly.
Within forty-eight hours, he hired a public relations firm and released a statement claiming he had been removed through a “hostile family takeover.”
He portrayed Isabella as a privileged heiress who had secretly controlled his career.
He called Theodore vindictive.
He described Celeste as a respected business consultant.
Several financial reporters repeated his claims.
Marcus appeared on television wearing a dark suit and a wounded expression.
“I built Vale-Crest from a single struggling hotel,” he said. “My wife concealed the true ownership structure because her family never respected what I accomplished.”
Isabella watched the interview from the boardroom.
“He’s good,” one director admitted.
“He always was,” Isabella replied.
Marcus understood performance.
He knew how to turn accusation into sympathy.
But he made one mistake.
He challenged Isabella to release the records.
So she did.
Laurent Capital published the original investment agreements, loan guarantees, board minutes, and development plans.
The documents showed Isabella had personally designed the recovery strategy for the first six hotels.
Emails revealed that she had negotiated major acquisitions Marcus later claimed as his own.
More damaging were his messages to Celeste.
In one, Marcus wrote:
Once Isabella’s father is gone, I’ll pressure her to transfer the trust shares. Then the whole company will finally be mine.
In another:
She still thinks this is about love. That makes her easy to manage.
The public reaction shifted overnight.
Former employees began speaking.
Vendors produced unpaid invoices.
A hotel manager revealed Marcus had demanded false occupancy reports to increase executive bonuses.
The story was no longer about a marriage.
It was about fraud, intimidation, and the theft of credit from the woman who had built an empire beside him.
