Chapter 14 - THE VANCE FAMILY COLLAPSES
The indictments came six weeks later.
David Vance.
Charles Vance.
Margaret Vance.
Multiple financial charges.
Multiple conspiracy counts.
Separate allegations.
Separate attorneys.
Separate stories.
The Vance family that once arrived at charity galas together now communicated through defense lawyers.
Charles blamed David.
Margaret blamed Charles.
David blamed himself only when blaming someone else became impossible.
The newspapers loved it.
I hated every headline that included Lily’s name.
DEAD CHILD’S MEDICAL TRUST AT CENTER OF VANCE FRAUD CASE.
She became a photograph beneath financial figures.
I stopped reading.
Instead, I focused on selling the estate.
I could not stay in that house.
Every room carried a version of my life I no longer believed.
The kitchen where Lily did homework.
The staircase where David carried her to bed.
The patio where we celebrated her sixth birthday.
The office where he forged evidence against me.
I kept Lily’s belongings.
Everything else could go.
One afternoon, while packing her desk, I found a small pink notebook.
Most pages contained drawings.
Dogs.
Rainbows.
Houses.
One page had a list.
THINGS TO DO WHEN DADDY COMES HOME.
1. Make pancakes.
2. Show him my science project.
3. Ask about swimming lessons.
4. Make Mommy and Daddy stop being mad.
5. Family movie.
I sat on the floor for a long time.
Children notice more than adults believe.
Lily knew our marriage was broken.
She simply believed love was glue.
That night, Julianne sent me a message.
I’m testifying.
I stared at it.
Then another arrived.
David’s attorney threatened to expose everything about me if I cooperate.
I replied.
That sounds like David.
She wrote again.
There’s one recording they don’t know about yet.
My pulse quickened.
I called Agent Cole.
Within an hour, Julianne was sitting in his office.
The recording had been made three days before Lily entered the ICU.
David and Charles were arguing.
Charles shouted.
If Maya discovers the trust before the divorce, we’re finished.
David answered.
She won’t.
Charles said.
And if the hospital needs money?
There was a pause.
Then David replied.
The hospital won’t know what’s missing.
I stopped the recording.
My hands were ice cold.
David had known the trust might matter medically.
He had still kept taking.
Agent Cole looked at me.
“This changes the case.”
I looked at Lily’s notebook.
“No.”
I whispered.
