CHAPTER 2 — The Confession They Never Meant to Give

The living room fell into complete silence.
The mariachi musicians quietly stepped aside.
No one touched the birthday cake.
No one reached for another drink.
The celebration had become a crime scene.
The lead investigator approached Julián calmly.
"Mr. Navarro..."
"Would you please repeat what you said a few moments ago?"
Julián forced a laugh.
"It was obviously a joke."
The investigator nodded.
"Fortunately, jokes can be replayed."
He held up a small digital recorder.
One of the servers entered the room.
Only she wasn't a server.
She was an undercover investigator from the Women's Justice Center.
Every word spoken since Ernesto's arrival had been recorded.
The investigator pressed play.
The room filled with Julián's own voice.
"I did."
"I gave her an early birthday present—a slap instead of congratulations."
The recording ended.
No one laughed this time.
Ofelia rushed toward the investigator.
"You can't use that."
"My son was drinking."
Ernesto finally spoke.
"Alcohol explains poor judgment."
"It doesn't erase criminal admissions."
The forensic examiner carefully photographed the fading bruises beneath Valeria's makeup.
Each photograph was timestamped.
Each injury documented.
Then the domestic violence advocate quietly asked,
"Mrs. Navarro..."
"Would you like to leave this house today?"
Valeria looked around the room.
For months she had believed she had nowhere to go.
Now she looked at her father.
He simply nodded.
"You don't have to survive here anymore."
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
May you like
"No."
"I don't."
