Chapter 18 - THE LAST ASHFORD SHIPMENT

I hated Nathan.

That was the simplest truth.

I hated what he had done.

I hated how long I had allowed him to convince me that silence was marriage.

But hatred did not mean I wanted him murdered.

Celeste was harder.

She had watched.

Counted.

Smiled.

Asked for two more.

Yet she had also stopped Midnight Crown.

She had chosen, finally, to help.

I would not let Mercer decide their fate.

Federal analysts traced the photograph.

Background markings identified an Ashford Global container terminal forty miles north.

The final terminal Nathan still technically controlled.

Mercer had selected it intentionally.

He wanted Nathan to die inside his own empire.

At 3:20 a.m., tactical teams surrounded the port.

Victor provided old Black Meridian access codes.

Dad coordinated the financial seizure.

I remained in the mobile command unit.

This time, I did not argue.

Inside Warehouse Twelve, Mercer livestreamed himself.

Nathan sat bleeding from a cut above his eyebrow.

Celeste was beside him.

Mercer stood between them.

“Bring me the ledger,” he said.

Dad spoke through the communication channel.

“You know that isn’t happening.”

Mercer smiled.

“Elias.”

“Twenty-two years.”

“You always were slow.”

Victor stepped toward the microphone.

“Leon.”

Mercer’s expression changed.

“So the traitor survives.”

Victor laughed.

“You tried to kill me three times.”

“And yet you never learned to finish the job.”

Their argument gave tactical teams time to approach.

Then Nathan suddenly spoke.

“Mercer.”

“What?”

“You forgot one thing.”

Mercer turned toward him.

Nathan smiled through the pain.

“This is my terminal.”

He drove his chair backward into an emergency control panel.

A steel fire door dropped between Mercer and Celeste.

Alarms erupted.

Sprinklers activated.

Nathan threw himself sideways as agents breached the warehouse.

For the first time since I had known him, Nathan did something that did not benefit Nathan.

Maybe he was trying to save Celeste.

Maybe he wanted one decent act entered into the final accounting of his life.

Gunfire cracked through the speakers.

Then silence.

One minute later, Dad’s radio activated.

“Mercer in custody.”

I closed my eyes.

“And Nathan?”

“Alive.”

“Celeste?”

“Alive.”

I exhaled.

Victor stood beside me.

His face showed no relief.

He knew what came next.

Dad turned toward him.

“Victor Sloane.”

Victor held out both hands.

“I know.”

Federal agents cuffed him.

“You understand you are under arrest for financial crimes connected to Black Meridian.”

“Yes.”

Dad looked at the man who had once been his closest friend.

“Why come back if you knew this would happen?”

Victor looked toward me.

“Because her mother once believed I could still choose the right side.”

Then he faced my father.

May you like

“It took me twenty-two years.”

“But she was right.”
