Emily agreed to meet in person.
She flew in two days later.
Jennifer expected a victim seeking revenge.
What she met was something more complicated.
Emily had rebuilt her life.
She owned a small technology company.
She was financially secure.
And seven months earlier, Daniel had contacted her.
“He wanted money.”
Jennifer stared at her.
“After everything he did?”
Emily smiled faintly.
“That was my reaction.”
Daniel claimed Patricia was in trouble.
He said an old tax issue could destroy the family.
Emily refused.
Then Daniel offered collateral.

“He said the documents were worth more than the loan.”
Rachel leaned forward.
“Did you see them?”
“Yes.”
“What did they show?”
Emily looked toward Jennifer.
“That Westbridge had been paying people for years.”
“Who?”
“Employees.”
“Why?”
“Some were settlements.”
Emily’s voice hardened.
“Others looked like hush money.”
Jennifer thought of Meridian.
“Do you still have copies?”
Emily shook her head.
“Daniel never gave me the full set.”
“But you loaned him $420,000?”
“Not because I trusted him.”
Emily opened her bag.
“I wanted him indebted to me.”
She placed a small encrypted drive on the table.
“Every meeting we had was recorded.”
Jennifer stared.
Emily had learned from the first time Daniel destroyed her evidence.
This time, she kept backups.
They listened to one recording.
Daniel’s voice was unmistakable.
“If Robert sees the ledgers, he’ll sacrifice me to save himself.”
Emily asked, “What about Patricia?”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“My mother will sacrifice everyone.”
Jennifer felt the hairs rise on her arms.
Then came the most important sentence.
Emily asked why Daniel needed the loan.
His answer changed everything.
“I need enough cash to cover the Crosshaven account before the annual audit.”
Marcus stopped the recording.
“Crosshaven?”
Robert had never mentioned it.
Neither had Patricia.
A subpoena revealed Crosshaven Holdings.
It controlled three commercial properties.
Westbridge had transferred almost $3 million into Crosshaven over six years.
The ownership records were intentionally complicated.
But eventually the accountants found the beneficial owner.
Robert Carter.
Jennifer closed her eyes.
Daniel had not lied about everything.
His father was deeper in the scheme than he admitted.
Rachel called Robert’s lawyer.
Robert refused to answer questions without counsel.
That evening, Jennifer received a court filing.
Robert had abruptly withdrawn his civil claims against Daniel.
No explanation.
No warning.
Jennifer read the notice twice.
Then her phone rang.
Robert.
She answered.
His voice was low.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For doing what I should have done years ago.”
Jennifer’s stomach tightened.
“What did you do?”
“I made an agreement with Daniel.”
Her heart sank.
“What agreement?”
Robert took a breath.
“He returns control of Crosshaven.”
“And?”
“I stop cooperating with your financial claims.”
